Abstract
In the age of globalization, there was an increase of people travelling around the world. In Singapore, tourism sectors performed especially well, with an estimated $6.2billion profits in 2012, posting a strong 12% growth over the same period last year. However, this strong growth does not reflect the overall atmosphere of the tourism in Singapore. Places such as Orchard road, Sentosa or the Garden by the Bay are often saturated with tourist due to the immerse advertising and guided tours. In contrast, places such as Japanese garden, Haw Par Villa are often filled with little tourist. The reason is not due to the unattractiveness of the place, but because advertising is insufficient and most tourist are unaware of such places. To promote the idea that every tourist attraction is a popular place; we will tap on social media such as Twitter and Instagram to gather comments and pictures of each tourist attraction certified by the Singapore Tourism Board. This information is stored in Solr and presented in our web application. Tourists can then review places of interest by clicking on any particular hotspots in the website. A ranking of the number of twitter replies was done to provide the most informative tweet to the user. In addition, tourist can do descriptive based query where a list of places for that particular query will be shown to the users. This application effectively provides more options to the tourists, yet at the same time, provide more business opportunities for tourist attractions that are considered “less” popular.
