Top class syrup limau and kopi cino made a lovely National Day treat at North Bridge Road Food Centre. Pei Yun Chia declared it particularly nice syrup limau, and I concurred. John Richards and I stumbled upon Tian Tian in the West – who knew!? – but they were sold out, so biryani and Indian rojak carried the day.
I made my way back to campus after dinner and as I walked into the Elm College dining hall, the students were singing along to Home, an NDP classic. The transition into Majulah Singapura was seamless. We stood and many of us sang along. It brought me back to last year and Lee Kuan Yew’s funeral, which ended, of course, with Majulah Singapura. I told myself last year when the song was over and our founding father had been laid to rest that I’d listen to it on repeat until I’d memorised the words and could sing along with confidence. I’m not there yet, but I will be.
North Bridge Road was still on the list. Now it isn’t. Made it to Big No. 90.
10 more days, 16 more hawker centres.
