Pulut Hitam | Black Glutinous Rice with Coconut Milk

Not only popular in Malaysia, this dessert is quite a star in many South East Asian countries such as Indonesia, Singapore and many more. It is also known as Black Rice Dessert, Bubur Ketan Hitam or 黑糯米. Using the black glutinous rice which is unpolished whole grain of glutinous white rice makes this dish very interesting due to its colour. After boiling, it looks rather purplish black and this adds a mysterious feel to this dessert. However, every spoonful can only bring a big smile to your face and this is something I can assure you after dishing this dessert to friends of so many nationalities. Due to its colour and the unfamiliarity with black glutinous rice, be prepared to have a fun conversation about this dessert.
